    He was also Bolingbroke's 'man of business' or Private Secretary (Henry St John was created 1st Viscount Bolingbroke in 1712, whose seat was at Lydiard Tregoze). In this capacity he was acquainted with Voltaire (Francois-Marie Arouet) after he gave him money owed by Bolingbroke in 1725. In 1727 Voltaire (writer and philosopher) stayed with him as a paying guest at Durham Yard, London during an illness. He also became friends with the poet Alexander Pope.
